Family Photoshoots in Mykonos: How to Get Photos Everyone Actually Loves

Mykonos has a reputation. Beach clubs, all night parties, the island people fly to for the scene. And that side is real, it is just not the whole island. After ten years shooting here, some of my favorite mornings have been with families. Grandparents, toddlers, teenagers who swore they didn't want to be in the photos and then couldn't stop laughing by the end. Away from the noise there is a quieter Mykonos of empty alleys at sunrise and calm beaches most visitors never find, and it brings families together in a way that shows up in the pictures.

If you are bringing your family to Mykonos and thinking about a photoshoot, this is everything I have learned about doing it right.

Families are not couples, and the shoot should not pretend they are

Here is the honest truth most photographers will not tell you. A family shoot is a completely different job from a couples shoot, and if your photographer treats it the same way, you end up with stiff, posed photos where everyone looks slightly uncomfortable and one kid is clearly being bribed.

I do not work like that. With families, my job is mostly to get out of the way. I set up the situation, the location, the light, the timing, and then I let your family be your family. The walk down an alley holding hands. The kid who runs ahead. The grandfather pointing something out to his grandkids. Those are the photos you will still love in twenty years, not the ones where everyone is lined up squinting into the sun saying cheese.

So if you have a wiggly toddler or a moody teenager or a parent who hates being photographed, do not worry. That is normal. That is the job. The best family photos come from letting the chaos happen and catching the real moments inside it.

The best locations for families in Mykonos

Not every spot that looks good on Instagram works for a family with small kids or older grandparents. I think about this constantly. Here is where I actually take families.

The quiet alleys of Chora. Early in the morning, before the shops open and the crowds arrive, the old town is empty and gorgeous. Soft light, no traffic, and the whitewashed walls make everyone look great. Kids can walk freely and there is no stress about losing anyone in a crowd.

The windmills and the Little Venice area. Iconic, recognizable, and worth it if you want that unmistakable Mykonos backdrop. We shoot it early to avoid the crowds. With families I keep this part short and sweet so nobody gets tired before we even get going.

The calmer beaches. The famous beach clubs are not ideal for kids. Too loud, too packed, and you usually need a reservation just to get in. Instead I take families to the quieter stretches of coast that most visitors never find. Space to run around, beautiful water, and the freedom to actually relax. This is where the local knowledge earns its keep.

Your villa or hotel. Some of the best family sessions happen right where you are staying. If you have rented a villa with a pool and a view, we can shoot the morning slowly, breakfast on the terrace, kids in the pool, everyone in their own world. No travel, no logistics, and the kids stay comfortable in a space they already know.

Timing is everything, especially with kids

For couples I almost always shoot at golden hour, late in the evening when the light goes soft and warm. For families with young children, I usually flip that. Early morning is the secret weapon.

The light at sunrise is just as beautiful, the island is empty, the temperature is kind, and most importantly, your kids are fresh. A toddler at seven in the morning is a different human than a toddler at seven in the evening after a full day of sun and gelato. We get the shoot done while everyone is in a good mood, and you have the whole rest of the day free.

If mornings are impossible because you have late sleepers, evening still works beautifully. We just plan around naps and snacks and keep it short. I would rather shoot forty good minutes than two exhausting hours.

What to wear (keep it simple)

The families whose photos turn out best almost always do the same thing. They pick a loose palette instead of matching outfits. Think soft neutrals, whites, beiges, light blues, sandy tones. The kind of colors that already live in Mykonos. Then everyone dresses within that palette in their own style.

Avoid big logos and busy patterns, they pull the eye away from faces. Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully in the island breeze. And comfortable shoes for everyone, because we will be walking on cobblestones and sand. That is it. Do not overthink it.

The grandparents trip is more special than you think

A lot of the families I shoot are three generations traveling together. Grandparents, parents, kids, all on one big trip that took a year to plan. If that is you, please do the photoshoot. I mean it.

These are the trips where the photos matter most and where people most often forget to take them, because everyone is busy and the days fly by. Years from now, a beautiful image of all three generations together on a Greek island is worth more than almost anything you can buy on the trip. I have had clients tell me the family photos became the most treasured thing they brought home. Give yourselves that.

Why a local photographer makes the whole thing easier

This is the part that genuinely changes your experience. After a decade here, I know which alleys are empty at which hour, which beaches welcome families, where to park, where the shade is when it gets hot, and how to keep a shoot moving so nobody melts down. You are on holiday with your family. The last thing you want is to be solving logistics.

I handle all of that. You show up, we have a relaxed morning, and you walk away with photos that actually look like your family on the best trip you have taken together. No stress, no awkward posing, no wrangling. That is the whole point.

Ready when you are

If you are coming to Mykonos with your family and want photos you will actually treasure, get in touch early. The best morning slots book up fast in summer, especially July and August, and a little planning ahead means we get the locations and timing that work best for your kids.

I photograph people in places they never want to leave. I would love to do that for your family.
